Problems associated with Spelling

English is the most accommodating Of all  languages. It has borrowed from virtually all other languages (popular) in the world. Interestingly, it tends to maintain the morphological structure of any language it borrows from. This has caused the irregularity in the spelling of some words that sound alike but are spelt differently or words that have similarly spellings but are pronounced differently. See for instance, the difference between rec ei ve and bel ie ve. The letters of focus, ei/ie in either word are jointly pronounced /i:/, yet ordered differently. Examiners cash in on this irregularity to test students painstaking attention to this minute yet germane areas in spelling. Before we go into some example of difficult words, let’s discuss why students spell wrongly: Assumption Arising From Overgeneralisation of Rules. English language has some basic rules that can guide one to learn especially at the very basic levels. However, these rules should not be over-generalised...

Standard form

Numbers In Standard Form  Standard form means the regular way to write out a number, like 4,300, as opposed to scientific notation, which is 4.3 x 10³, or in expanded form, like 4,000 + 300. You can convert numbers large and small to standard form through some steps. Standard form is a way of writing down very large or very small numbers readily. 10³ = 1000, so 4 × 10³ = 4000. Therefore, 4000 can be written as 4 × 10³. This idea can be made use of in writing even larger numbers down readily in standard form. Therefore, lets take a big number such as 8,143,260. Now if we wish to convert this into standard form we want it to be just 8 before a decimal point, all these other numbers after a decimal and then we're going to multiply it by 10 to an exponent. Therefore, in this regard at the moment the decimal is over here. And we want it to be over here. Therefore we have to move it over 1,2,3,4,5,6 places. So we have 8.143,26 and you don't have to say the zero, times 10 to the 6t...

Physic - Speed, Velocity and Acceleration

Speed Speed is the distance (D) travelled divided by the time (Δt) taken for the journey. Quantity: speed (v)  Unit: metre per second  Unit symbol: m⋅s−1 Velocity Velocity is the change in position of a body divided by the time it took for the displacement to occur. Quantity: average velocity (→v)  Unit name: metre per second  Unit symbol: m⋅s−¹ "Distance and time are scalars and therefore speed will also be a scalar." Example:  James walks 2km away from home in 30 minutes. He then turns around and walks back home along the same path, also in 30 minutes. Calculate James’ average speed and average velocity. Step 1: Identify what information is given and what is asked for The question explicitly gives the distance and time out (2km in 30minutes) the distance and time back (2 km in 30 minutes) Step 2: Check that all units are SI units. The information is not in SI units and must therefore be converted. To convert   👉Convert (km) to (m),  we know t...

Chemistry - Substance, Element & Compound

Pure substances Any material that is not a mixture, is called a pure substance. Pure substances include elements and compounds. It is much more difficult to break down pure substances into their parts, and complex chemical methods are needed to do this. We can use melting and boiling points and chromatography to test for pure substances. Pure substances have a sharply defined (one temperature) melting or boiling point. Impure substances have a temperature range over which they melt or boil. Chromatography is the process of separating substances into their individual components. If a substance is pure then chromatography will only produce one substance at the end of the process. If a substance is impure then several substances will be seen at the end of the process. Elements An element is a chemical substance that can’t be divided or changed into other chemical substances by any ordinary chemical means. The smallest unit of an element is the atom. Definition: Element An element is...

English - Grammatical Concord

Definition: Concord is the relationship between a subject and its verb, or between a number or determiner and its noun; e.g. I look/she looks… one bell/three bells. It is also called concord. Concord can also be seen as the relationship between words in gender, number, case, person, or any other grammatical category which affects the forms of the words. Concord, as it is also often referred to, mainly focuses on subject-verb agreement. This is subdivided into three categories: Grammatical concord Concord of proximity Notional concord "Some Rules for Grammatical Concord" The grand rule of subject-verb concord is that a singular subject takes a singular verb and a plural subject takes a plural verb. And it is needful to establish this fact that singular verbs are inflected with suffix ‘-s’ while plural verbs maintain the base form. In other words, a singular verb ends with an ‘s’ and a plural verb has no ‘s’. Verb Singular   •     Plural comes     ...
