Chemistry tutorial on Matter

Classification of Matter       All the objects that we see in the world around us, are made of matter. Matter makes up the air we breathe, the ground we walk on, the food we eat and the animals and plants that live around us. Even our own human bodies are made of matter! Different objects can be made of different types of materials (the matter from which objects are made) . For example, a cupboard (an object) is made of wood, nails, hinges and knobs (the materials). The properties of the materials will affect the properties of the object. In the example of the cupboard, the strength of the wood and metals make the cupboard strong and durable. It is very important to understand the properties of materials, so that we can use them in our homes, in industry and in other applications. Some of the properties of matter that you should know are: Materials can be strong and resist bending (e.g. bricks, rocks) or weak and bend easily (e.g. clothes) Materials that conduct ...

Questions 1. When a p-n junction is under reverse bias mode, the width of the depletion region will be increased. Which of the following statements is true? A. The applied voltage moves the electrons from n-type region to p-type region. B. The applied voltage moves the holes from p-type region to n-type region. C. The applied voltage drives the electrons towards n-type region. D. The applied voltage drives the holes towards n-type region. Explanation: Under reverse bias mode, the electrons in the n-region are pulled away from the depletion region, leaving more immobile positive ions in the region. In other words, the electrons are driven towards the n-region. Answer is C 2. Which statement about conduction of electricity in semiconductors is correct? A. People tend to be drawn to others who seem to have about the assets and liabilities they themselves possess. Second, people look for compatible beliefs, attitudes and interests to support the initial attraction. It is not until the third stage that people reveal to each other how they handle responsibilities, react to disappointments and cope with a wide variety of situations. The key to compatibility is for the couple to be sure that they have arrived at this last stage before they think about marriage. Such people are less likely to be unpleasantly surprised ...

Chemistry - Bonding

Question: The number of nonbonding (lone) pairs in a water molecule is __________. Options: a. one b. two c. three d. four Explanation : In a water molecule, even though it has 2 bonding pairs (2 Hydrogen atoms attached to Oxygen atom), it does not have a linear geometry. The geometry of water is known as bent. It has a bent geometry due to the 2 lone pairs present in the Oxygen atom (central atom) that results in a repulsion to form a bent geometry. Again, the water molecule has 2 nonbonding (lone) pairs in the Oxygen atom (central atom). Lone pairs: A nonbonding(lone) pair is a pair of valence electrons that are not involved in any kind of bonding to any different atoms. Basically, it is an excess valence electrons that are usually represented by two dots in the central atom. The lone pair has a nucleophilic property and can undergo bond formation if there is an electrophilic compound present. The lone pair in the central atom can cause a change or shift in the orientation sinc...
